Ribeye Steak:
- 2 boneless ribeye steaks (1 to 1½ inches thick)
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 tablespoon butter
- 1 teaspoon kosher salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon fresh thyme or rosemary (optional)
French Onions:
- 2 large yellow onions (thinly sliced)
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon sugar
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/4 cup beef broth or water (to deglaze)
Fries:
- 4 medium russet potatoes (cut into thin fries)
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon paprika
- 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
Instructions
- Make the French onions: In a large skillet, heat butter and olive oil over medium-low heat. Add the sliced onions, salt, sugar, and pepper. Cook slowly for 25–30 minutes until caramelized. Deglaze with broth/water and cook for another 5–10 minutes.
- Cook the fries: Preheat oven to 425°F. Toss potatoes with oil, salt, paprika, and garlic powder. Bake for 35–40 minutes.
- Cook the steak: Season ribeyes and sear in a skillet for 3–4 minutes per side. Rest before slicing.
- To serve: Top ribeyes with caramelized onions. Serve with fries.
Notes
- You can melt Swiss or Gruyère cheese over the steaks for a French onion steak twist.
- Add a green salad or sautéed spinach to complement the meal.
