Ingredients
Scale
Pastry and Filling
- 1 sheet puff pastry (thawed)
- ½ cup strawberry preserves or jam
- 1 cup fresh strawberries (hulled and finely diced)
Finishing
- 1 egg (beaten, for egg wash)
- 1 tablespoon granulated sugar (optional)
- Powdered sugar for dusting (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat and Prepare: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking and ensure even baking.
- Cut the Puff Pastry: On a lightly floured surface, roll out the thawed puff pastry sheet gently to smooth seams and even thickness. Use a heart-shaped cookie cutter to cut out about 12 hearts, depending on the size of your cutter.
- Assemble the Pastries: Place half of the heart cutouts on the prepared baking sheet. Spoon about 1 teaspoon of strawberry preserves in the center of each heart, then add a small spoonful of finely diced fresh strawberries on top of the preserves.
- Seal the Hearts: Brush the edges of the filled hearts with beaten egg to help seal them. Place the remaining heart cutouts on top, pressing edges gently with a fork to seal fully and prevent leakage during baking.
- Add Finishing Touches: Brush the tops of the sealed pastries with additional egg wash for a lovely golden shine and sprinkle with granulated sugar if desired for extra sweetness and crunch.
- Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 15–18 minutes, or until the pastries are puffed up and golden brown in color, signaling they are fully baked.
- Cool and Serve: Allow the pastries to cool slightly on a rack. Dust with powdered sugar before serving to add an elegant finish and a touch of extra sweetness.
Notes
- You can substitute the strawberry preserves with raspberry or apricot jam for a unique flavor variation.
- Serve these pastries warm and consider pairing with a scoop of vanilla ice cream to elevate them into a decadent dessert.
