Ingredients
Scale
Cake
- 1 box yellow or white cake mix (plus ingredients required for the mix: eggs, oil, water)
Tres Leches Mixture
- 1 can (14 oz) sweetened condensed milk
- 1 can (12 oz) evaporated milk
- 1 cup whole milk
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
Topping
- Whipped cream (for topping)
- Fresh fruit (optional, for garnish)
Instructions
- Prepare the Cake: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Follow the instructions on the boxed cake mix to prepare the batter, using the required eggs, oil, and water. Pour the batter into a greased 9×13-inch baking pan and bake until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Allow the cake to cool completely before proceeding.
- Make the Tres Leches Mixture: In a mixing bowl, whisk together the sweetened condensed milk, evaporated milk, whole milk, and vanilla extract until the mixture is smooth and fully combined.
- Soak the Cake: Using a fork, poke holes all over the surface of the cooled cake to allow the milk mixture to penetrate deeply. Slowly pour the tres leches milk blend evenly over the cake, ensuring it soaks in thoroughly. Cover and refrigerate the cake for at least 2 hours, or preferably overnight, to maximize moisture absorption.
- Top with Whipped Cream: Just before serving, spread a generous layer of whipped cream evenly on top of the soaked cake. Garnish with fresh fruit such as strawberries, cherries, or berries if desired. Slice and serve chilled for the best flavor and texture.
Notes
- For best results, refrigerate the cake overnight to allow full absorption of the milk soak.
- You can use homemade whipped cream or store-bought for convenience.
- Fresh fruit garnish adds a bright contrast but is optional.
- If preferred, substitute whole milk with 2% milk but it may slightly reduce richness.
- This recipe can be made gluten-free by using a gluten-free yellow cake mix.
