Description

Delicious and savory sausage and cream cheese pinwheels featuring spicy or mild breakfast sausage blended with creamy cheeses and aromatic spices, all rolled up in flaky crescent dough for a perfect appetizer or snack that’s easy to prepare and sure to impress.

Ingredients

Scale

Sausage Mixture

  • 1 pound breakfast sausage (spicy or mild, depending on preference)
  • 1 package (8 oz) cream cheese, softened
  • 1/4 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes (optional, for heat)

Dough

  • 1 can (8 oz) crescent roll dough

Garnish

  • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or lightly grease it to prevent sticking during baking.
  2. Cook Sausage: In a skillet over medium heat, cook the breakfast sausage while breaking it apart with a spoon. Cook until fully browned and no longer pink, about 6-8 minutes. Drain excess grease and set sausage aside to cool slightly.
  3. Prepare Cheese Mixture: In a large bowl, combine the softened cream cheese, shredded cheddar cheese, garlic powder, onion powder, and crushed red pepper flakes if using. Stir until the mixture is smooth and well combined.
  4. Combine Sausage and Cheese: Once the sausage has cooled a bit, add it to the cream cheese mixture and stir thoroughly to create an even filling.
  5. Prepare Dough: Roll out the crescent roll dough on a flat surface, keeping the dough in one large sheet by pinching the seams together to form a solid sheet instead of separate triangles.
  6. Spread Filling: Evenly spread the sausage and cream cheese mixture over the dough, leaving about a 1/4-inch border around the edges for sealing.
  7. Roll and Cut: Starting from one edge, carefully roll the dough tightly into a log shape, pinching the seam to seal it well. Then cut the log into 1-inch wide pinwheels using a sharp knife.
  8. Arrange on Baking Sheet: Place the pinwheels spaced with a little room between each one on the prepared baking sheet.
  9. Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 12-15 minutes until the pinwheels are golden brown and the filling is bubbly and hot.
  10. Cool and Serve: Remove from the oven and let cool for a few minutes. Garnish with chopped fresh parsley if desired. Serve warm and enjoy!

Notes

  • Using mild or spicy sausage can adjust the heat level to your preference.
  • Ensure the cream cheese is softened to mix easily with the other ingredients.
  • Pinching the crescent roll seams together prevents filling from leaking during baking.
  • You can add extra herbs like chives or oregano to the filling for added flavor.
  • Serve these pinwheels as a party appetizer, snack, or even a fun breakfast treat.
