Salsa Morita Ingredients
- 5 morita chiles
- 2 medium tomatoes
- 1/4 small onion
- 1 clove garlic
- 1 tbsp vegetable oil
- 1/2 tsp salt (or to taste)
- 1/4 cup water (or as needed)
Instructions
- Toast the Morita Chiles: Heat the morita chiles in a dry skillet over medium heat for about 1-2 minutes until aromatic. Watch carefully to avoid burning them.
- Prepare the Chiles: Remove the toasted chiles from the skillet, then remove their stems and seeds. Set aside for blending.
- Sauté Vegetables: In the same skillet, add vegetable oil and heat over medium heat. Add tomatoes, onion, and garlic; cook for 5-7 minutes until tomatoes are softened and slightly charred, developing deep flavor.
- Combine Ingredients: Remove the charred vegetables from heat and transfer to a blender or food processor along with the prepared morita chiles.
- Blend the Salsa: Add salt and water, then blend until smooth. Adjust water quantity to achieve your desired salsa consistency.
- Season and Serve: Taste the salsa and adjust salt if needed. Serve fresh with tacos, grilled meats, or as a savory dip with chips.
Notes
- Be careful not to burn the chiles when toasting; they should be aromatic but not blackened.
- You can adjust the amount of water to make the salsa thicker or thinner depending on use.
- For deeper flavor, allow the salsa to rest for 10 minutes before serving.
- This salsa stores well in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
