Description

Salsa Morita is a smoky, flavorful Mexican salsa made with roasted morita chiles, tomatoes, onion, and garlic. This versatile sauce brings a rich, slightly spicy depth to tacos, grilled meats, or as a dipping sauce for chips. Ready in just 25 minutes, it’s a vibrant addition to any Mexican-inspired meal.

Ingredients

Scale

Salsa Morita Ingredients

  • 5 morita chiles
  • 2 medium tomatoes
  • 1/4 small onion
  • 1 clove garlic
  • 1 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 1/2 tsp salt (or to taste)
  • 1/4 cup water (or as needed)

Instructions

  1. Toast the Morita Chiles: Heat the morita chiles in a dry skillet over medium heat for about 1-2 minutes until aromatic. Watch carefully to avoid burning them.
  2. Prepare the Chiles: Remove the toasted chiles from the skillet, then remove their stems and seeds. Set aside for blending.
  3. Sauté Vegetables: In the same skillet, add vegetable oil and heat over medium heat. Add tomatoes, onion, and garlic; cook for 5-7 minutes until tomatoes are softened and slightly charred, developing deep flavor.
  4. Combine Ingredients: Remove the charred vegetables from heat and transfer to a blender or food processor along with the prepared morita chiles.
  5. Blend the Salsa: Add salt and water, then blend until smooth. Adjust water quantity to achieve your desired salsa consistency.
  6. Season and Serve: Taste the salsa and adjust salt if needed. Serve fresh with tacos, grilled meats, or as a savory dip with chips.

Notes

  • Be careful not to burn the chiles when toasting; they should be aromatic but not blackened.
  • You can adjust the amount of water to make the salsa thicker or thinner depending on use.
  • For deeper flavor, allow the salsa to rest for 10 minutes before serving.
  • This salsa stores well in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
