Description
Patty Melt Toasties are a classic American diner-style sandwich featuring juicy seasoned ground beef patties, caramelized onions, and melted Swiss cheese, all nestled between buttery toasted rye or sourdough bread slices. This recipe combines savory flavors and crispy textures, perfect for a satisfying main course.
Ingredients
Scale
For the Beef Patties
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
For the Sandwich
- 4 tablespoons butter, softened and divided
- 1 large yellow onion, thinly sliced
- 8 slices rye bread or sourdough
- 8 slices Swiss cheese
Instructions
- Caramelize the Onions: In a skillet over medium heat, add 1 tablespoon of butter and the thinly sliced yellow onions. Cook for 12 to 15 minutes, stirring often, until the onions become deeply caramelized and golden brown. Once done, remove them from the skillet and set aside.
- Prepare the Beef Patties: In a mixing bowl, combine the ground beef with salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and Worcestershire sauce. Mix gently to combine, then form the mixture into 4 thin patties sized to fit your bread slices.
- Cook the Patties: Using the same skillet (wipe if needed), cook the beef patties over medium heat for 3 to 4 minutes on each side until browned and fully cooked through. Remove the patties from the skillet and set aside.
- Assemble the Toasties: Spread the remaining butter evenly on one side of each bread slice. Place one slice of bread, buttered side down, back in the skillet over medium heat. Layer one slice of Swiss cheese, a cooked beef patty, a scoop of caramelized onions, another slice of Swiss cheese, and top with a second slice of bread, buttered side up.
- Cook the Sandwiches: Cook each assembled sandwich for 2 to 3 minutes per side, pressing gently and flipping carefully, until the bread is golden brown and crisp while the cheese melts inside.
- Serve: Slice the patty melt toasties in half if desired, and serve warm for the best flavor and texture experience.
Notes
- Add a swipe of thousand island dressing inside the sandwich for a classic patty melt flavor enhancement.
- You can substitute Swiss cheese with Gruyere or cheddar if you prefer a stronger melt and flavor.
- Use rye bread for a traditionally tangy and authentic taste or sourdough for a milder option.
- Be patient when caramelizing onions; the deep flavor comes from slow cooking.
