Ingredients
Scale
Main Ingredients
- 1 cup whole milk
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- ½ teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)
Instructions
- Combine Milk and Sugar: In a medium saucepan, mix the whole milk and granulated sugar together, ensuring the sugar begins dissolving as the mixture heats.
- Heat Slowly: Place the saucepan over medium-low heat, stirring constantly to help dissolve the sugar fully without burning the milk.
- Simmer and Reduce: Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer, being careful to avoid vigorous boiling. Continue to cook for 30 to 35 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the volume reduces by about half and the texture thickens slightly.
- Finish and Flavor: Once thickened and starting to turn slightly golden, remove the pan from heat. Stir in the unsalted butter and vanilla extract (if using) until the mixture is smooth and glossy.
- Cool and Store: Let the condensed milk cool to room temperature, during which it will thicken further. Transfer to a clean jar or airtight container and refrigerate for up to 1 week.
Notes
- For a dairy-free version, substitute canned coconut milk and follow the same cooking process.
- To achieve an extra smooth texture, blend the cooled mixture before storing.
