Description

Crispy Fried Mushrooms feature tender button or cremini mushrooms soaked in buttermilk, coated with a seasoned flour and cornmeal mixture, and deep-fried to golden perfection. This American appetizer offers a crunchy exterior with juicy, flavorful insides, perfect as a snack or party treat.

Ingredients

Scale

Mushroom Soak

  • 8 oz button or cremini mushrooms (cleaned and stems trimmed)
  • 1 cup buttermilk

Coating

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup cornmeal
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • ½ teaspoon smoked paprika
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper

For Frying

  • Vegetable oil (enough for 2 inches deep in skillet or pot)

Instructions

  1. Soak Mushrooms: Place the cleaned mushrooms in a bowl and pour the buttermilk over them. Let them soak for at least 15 minutes to tenderize and infuse flavor.
  2. Prepare Coating Mixture: In a separate bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, cornmeal, garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika, salt, and black pepper until well combined.
  3. Heat Oil: Heat about 2 inches of vegetable oil in a deep skillet or pot to 350°F (175°C). Use a thermometer to maintain the correct frying temperature for even cooking.
  4. Coat Mushrooms: Working in batches, remove the mushrooms from the buttermilk, allowing excess to drip off. Dredge them thoroughly in the flour and cornmeal mixture, ensuring an even coating on all sides.
  5. Fry Mushrooms: Carefully place the coated mushrooms into the hot oil. Fry for 3–4 minutes, turning occasionally, until they turn golden brown and achieve a crispy texture.
  6. Drain and Serve: Use a slotted spoon to remove the mushrooms from the oil and drain them on paper towels to remove excess oil. Serve hot with your favorite dipping sauce for best taste.

Notes

  • Serve mushrooms immediately to enjoy the optimum crispiness and flavor.
  • For an extra spicy kick, add cayenne pepper to the flour and cornmeal coating mixture.
  • Alternatively, for a lighter version, you can air fry the coated mushrooms at 400°F for 10–12 minutes, flipping halfway through cooking.
