Description

A creamy and comforting tuna casserole featuring tender egg noodles, succulent tuna, sweet peas, and a cheesy mushroom soup base, all topped with a crunchy cheesy panko breadcrumb crust and baked to golden perfection.

Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 12 oz egg noodles
  • 1 cup frozen peas, defrosted
  • 2 (10 1/2 oz) cans condensed mushroom soup
  • 2 (5-6 oz) cans tuna, drained
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 2 cups cheddar cheese, divided
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Topping Ingredients

  • 1 cup panko bread crumbs
  • 2 tbsp butter, melted

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Oven and Baking Dish: Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish or line it with parchment paper to prevent sticking, then set aside.
  2. Make the Crumb Topping: In a small bowl, combine panko bread crumbs, melted butter, and 1 cup of cheddar cheese until the mixture is evenly blended. Set aside for later use.
  3. Cook the Egg Noodles: Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add egg noodles and cook according to package instructions until al dente. Drain the noodles and let them cool slightly.
  4. Mix the Casserole Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, combine the cooked noodles, defrosted peas, condensed mushroom soup, drained tuna, milk, and 1 cup cheddar cheese. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Stir well until all ingredients are thoroughly mixed.
  5. Assemble the Casserole: Spread the prepared noodle and tuna mixture evenly into the greased baking dish. Evenly sprinkle the crumb topping over the casserole to cover the surface.
  6. Bake: Place the casserole in the preheated oven. Bake for 18-20 minutes until the casserole is bubbly and the topping turns golden brown and crispy.
  7. Serve: Remove the casserole from the oven and allow it to cool for a few minutes before serving. Enjoy your creamy, crunchy tuna casserole!

Notes

  • You can substitute cream of mushroom soup with cream of celery or cream of chicken for a different flavor.
  • Adding sautéed onions or mushrooms to the noodle mixture can enhance the dish’s depth.
  • Panko breadcrumbs can be replaced with crushed Ritz crackers or regular breadcrumbs if preferred.
  • For extra creaminess, you can mix in a dollop of sour cream or cream cheese before baking.
  • Make sure not to overcook the noodles during boiling as they will continue cooking in the oven.
