Frosting Ingredients
- 8 oz (225 g) cream cheese, softened
- 1/2 cup (115 g) unsalted butter, softened
- 4 cups (500 g) powdered sugar, sifted
- 2 tsp pure vanilla extract
- 1–2 tbsp milk or heavy cream (optional, for consistency)
Instructions
- Beat Cream Cheese and Butter: In a large mixing bowl, beat the softened cream cheese and butter using an electric mixer until the mixture is smooth and creamy, approximately 2-3 minutes.
- Add Powdered Sugar Gradually: Slowly incorporate the powdered sugar one cup at a time on low speed. Once combined, increase the speed to medium-high and continue beating until well blended and fluffy.
- Mix in Vanilla Extract: Add the pure vanilla extract and beat the mixture for an additional minute to fully incorporate the flavor.
- Adjust Consistency: If the frosting is too thick, add milk or heavy cream one tablespoon at a time to loosen the texture. If too thin, add more powdered sugar a little at a time until the desired thickness is achieved.
- Use or Store: Use the frosting immediately to decorate your baked goods, or store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to one week. Before using refrigerated frosting, bring it back to room temperature and rewhip to restore its creamy texture.
Notes
- Ensure cream cheese and butter are softened to room temperature for smooth mixing.
- Sifting powdered sugar prevents lumps and ensures a fluffy texture.
- Adjust milk or heavy cream carefully to avoid making the frosting too runny.
- Rewhipping refrigerated frosting helps regain a smooth consistency before use.
- This frosting pairs well with carrot cake, red velvet cake, and spice cakes.
