Description

A smooth and flavorful Coffee Buttercream recipe perfect for decorating cakes or cupcakes with a rich coffee taste. This easy-to-make frosting combines creamy butter, sweet icing sugar, and strong instant coffee for a luscious, pipeable finish that coffee lovers will adore.

Ingredients

Scale

Buttercream Ingredients

  • 250 g softened butter
  • 500 g icing sugar
  • ¼ tsp vanilla extract
  • 3 tbsp instant coffee granules
  • 1½ tbsp boiling water
  • Optional: milk (to adjust consistency)

Instructions

  1. Prepare Coffee Mixture: Mix the instant coffee granules (3 tbsp) with boiling water (1½ tbsp) until dissolved, then set aside to cool to room temperature.
  2. Beat Butter: Cut the softened butter (250 g) into cubes and beat on low-medium speed until soft and creamy.
  3. Add Icing Sugar: Gradually add the icing sugar (500 g) to the butter while beating to prevent flying, continue beating until fully combined and smooth.
  4. Incorporate Vanilla and Coffee: Add the vanilla extract (¼ tsp) followed by the cooled coffee mixture one teaspoon at a time, beating well after each addition until fully incorporated.
  5. Adjust Consistency: Check the buttercream consistency; it should be soft and ready for piping. If it’s too stiff, beat in a small amount of milk to soften.
  6. Decorate or Serve: Use immediately to decorate cakes or cupcakes, or enjoy straight off the spoon for a delicious treat.

Notes

  • Make sure the butter is softened to room temperature for easy beating.
  • Gradually add icing sugar to avoid a mess and ensure smooth frosting.
  • If the buttercream is too thick, add milk sparingly to reach the desired consistency.
  • Allow coffee mixture to cool before adding to prevent melting the butter.
  • This buttercream stores well in the refrigerator; bring to room temperature and rebeat before using.
  • For a stronger coffee flavor, increase instant coffee slightly but be mindful of bitterness.
