Description

This Classic Patty Melt recipe features juicy seasoned ground beef patties layered with cheddar and provolone cheeses, sandwiched between buttery rye bread and toasted to golden perfection. Enhanced with a tangy homemade sauce of mayonnaise, ketchup, sweet relish, and sugar, these comforting sandwiches are a delicious twist on traditional burgers, perfect for a hearty lunch or dinner.

Ingredients

Scale

Bread & Butter

  • 6 slices rye bread
  • 6 tablespoons butter, softened

Beef Patties

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 3/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon onion powder

Sauce

  • 3 tablespoons mayonnaise
  • 2 tablespoons ketchup
  • 1 teaspoon sweet relish
  • 1 teaspoon sugar

Cheese

  • 6 slices cheddar cheese
  • 6 slices provolone cheese

Instructions

  1. Prep the Bread: Butter one side of each slice of rye bread and set aside. This will help create a crispy, golden exterior when toasted.
  2. Make the Patties: In a bowl, combine ground beef with black pepper, salt, and onion powder. Mix gently to incorporate seasoning, then shape the meat mixture into three even patties.
  3. Cook the Patties: Heat a skillet over medium-high heat. Place patties in the skillet and cook for 2-3 minutes on each side to sear the outside. Then reduce heat to low and continue cooking until the internal temperature reaches 160°F, ensuring they are fully cooked.
  4. Make the Sauce: In a small bowl, combine mayonnaise, ketchup, sweet relish, and sugar. Stir thoroughly until well blended. Set the sauce aside for assembling the sandwiches.
  5. Assemble the Patty Melts: In another skillet preheated to medium-low, place the buttered bread slices butter-side down. On each slice, layer 2 slices of cheddar cheese, one cooked patty, and 2 slices of provolone cheese. Spread the prepared sauce on the unbuttered side of another slice of bread and place it sauce-side down on top of the cheese layers, forming a sandwich.
  6. Cook the Sandwiches: Toast each sandwich in the skillet for 2-3 minutes on each side, or until the bread is golden brown and the cheese has melted. Repeat the process to make all three patty melts.

Notes

  • Use freshly ground beef for the best flavor and texture.
  • Ensure the patties are cooked to an internal temperature of 160°F to comply with food safety guidelines.
  • Rye bread can be substituted with sourdough or another hearty bread if preferred.
  • The sauce can be adjusted by adding a bit of mustard or hot sauce for extra flavor.
  • Butter the bread generously to achieve a crispy, golden crust.
