Ingredients
Scale
For the Cinnamon Sugar Mixture
- 345 g Sugar (1 ½ cups)
- 12 g Cinnamon (4 teaspoons)
- Additional granulated sugar for rolling
For the Dough
- 300 g Puff Pastry Scraps (use Classic Puff Pastry)
Instructions
- Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) to prepare for baking the cinnamon sugar twists.
- Prepare Cinnamon Sugar: Whisk together 345 g of sugar and 12 g of cinnamon in a bowl to create a fragrant cinnamon sugar blend. Pour some of the mixture onto your counter and sprinkle extra granulated sugar over it for rolling.
- Coat Puff Pastry: Roll the cold puff pastry scraps in the cinnamon sugar on the counter, adding more sugar on top as you work it into the dough to ensure even coating.
- Roll Dough: Roll the coated puff pastry out to about 1/8 inch thickness. Work quickly to keep the dough cold to ensure maximum flakiness during baking.
- Cut Strips: Using a pizza cutter or sharp knife, cut the rolled dough into ½ inch wide strips.
- Twist Dough: Take one strip at a time and twist it tightly into a spiral shape. Lay each twist on a parchment-lined baking sheet and press the ends down slightly to prevent unrolling.
- Repeat: Continue twisting and placing the remaining dough strips onto the baking sheet.
- Chill: Place the baking sheet in the refrigerator for about 30 minutes or until the dough is completely cold. This helps the twists keep their shape and bake evenly.
- Bake: Bake the chilled twists in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes or until they turn a dark golden brown and the sugar has caramelized, creating a delicious crunch.
- Cool and Store: Allow the twists to cool completely before storing them in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days. To refresh, warm them briefly in the oven to regain that freshly baked taste.
Notes
- Work quickly with the puff pastry to keep it cold, which helps it bake flaky and rise well.
- Chilling the twisted dough before baking ensures the shapes hold and improves texture.
- You can use store-bought puff pastry if you don’t have scraps from scratch.
- Store in an airtight container to maintain crispness.
- Reheat briefly in the oven to refresh the twists after a few days.
