Description

This Chinese Chicken Cabbage Stir-Fry is a quick and healthy main course featuring tender chicken breast and crisp green cabbage cooked to perfection in a savory soy and oyster sauce blend. Enhanced with ginger, garlic, and sesame oil, this dish delivers a flavorful, satisfying meal ideal for weeknight dinners.

Ingredients

Scale

Chicken Marinade

  • 1 lb boneless, skinless chicken breast, thinly sliced
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch

Vegetables

  • 3 cups green cabbage, shredded
  • 1 carrot, julienned
  • 3 green onions, chopped (separate white and green parts)
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon ginger, minced

Sauces and Oils

  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce (divided)
  • 1 tablespoon oyster sauce
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil (divided)
  • ½ teaspoon sesame oil

Seasoning and Garnish

  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Sesame seeds for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Marinate the Chicken: In a bowl, combine the thinly sliced chicken breast with 1 tablespoon soy sauce and 1 tablespoon cornstarch. Toss thoroughly to coat the chicken evenly. Set aside to marinate for 10 to 15 minutes to allow the flavors to penetrate.
  2. Cook the Chicken: Heat 1 tablespoon vegetable oil in a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat. Add the marinated chicken and stir-fry for 4 to 5 minutes until the pieces are browned and fully cooked through. Remove the chicken from the pan and set it aside.
  3. Sauté the Aromatics: In the same pan, add the remaining 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil. Stir-fry the minced garlic, ginger, and the white parts of the green onions for about 30 seconds until they release their fragrance, being careful not to burn them.
  4. Cook the Vegetables: Add the shredded cabbage and julienned carrot to the pan. Stir-fry the vegetables for 3 to 4 minutes until they are slightly wilted but still retain a crisp texture.
  5. Combine and Season: Return the cooked chicken to the pan. Add the remaining 1 tablespoon soy sauce, oyster sauce, and sesame oil. Stir all ingredients together well and cook for an additional 1 to 2 minutes to heat everything through and blend the flavors. Taste and season with salt and pepper as needed.
  6. Garnish and Serve: Sprinkle sesame seeds and the green parts of the chopped green onions over the stir-fry before serving. This dish pairs wonderfully with steamed rice or noodles for a complete meal.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, add a splash of rice vinegar or a teaspoon of chili garlic sauce during the final stir.
  • This stir-fry is best served immediately to maintain the crispness of the vegetables.
  • Feel free to substitute chicken breast with chicken thighs for a juicier texture.
  • Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 2 days.
  • Serve over steamed rice or noodles to make it a filling meal.
