Potatoes:
- 3 pounds russet or Yukon gold potatoes, thinly sliced
Cheese Sauce:
- 3 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 3 cups whole milk, warmed
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 2 cups sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
- 1 cup Gruyère cheese, shredded
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon paprika
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg (optional)
Garnish:
- 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped
Instructions
- Preheat Oven: Preheat oven to 375°F and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
- Make Cheese Sauce: Melt butter in a saucepan, add garlic, whisk in flour, then slowly stir in warm milk and cream until thickened. Remove from heat, add cheeses, salt, pepper, paprika, and nutmeg.
- Layer Potatoes: Layer half of the potato slices in the dish, pour half of the cheese sauce over them. Repeat with remaining potatoes and sauce.
- Bake: Cover with foil and bake for 40 minutes. Remove foil and bake an additional 25–30 minutes until golden brown and bubbly.
- Rest and Serve: Let rest for 10 minutes before serving. Garnish with parsley.
