Indulge in the ultimate comfort food with these creamy and cheesy scalloped potatoes. Layers of thinly sliced potatoes smothered in a rich cheese sauce, baked to golden perfection. Perfect as a side dish or a satisfying vegetarian main course.

Ingredients

Scale

Potatoes:

  • 3 pounds russet or Yukon gold potatoes, thinly sliced

Cheese Sauce:

  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 3 cups whole milk, warmed
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 2 cups sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
  • 1 cup Gruyère cheese, shredded
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg (optional)

Garnish:

  • 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat oven to 375°F and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  2. Make Cheese Sauce: Melt butter in a saucepan, add garlic, whisk in flour, then slowly stir in warm milk and cream until thickened. Remove from heat, add cheeses, salt, pepper, paprika, and nutmeg.
  3. Layer Potatoes: Layer half of the potato slices in the dish, pour half of the cheese sauce over them. Repeat with remaining potatoes and sauce.
  4. Bake: Cover with foil and bake for 40 minutes. Remove foil and bake an additional 25–30 minutes until golden brown and bubbly.
  5. Rest and Serve: Let rest for 10 minutes before serving. Garnish with parsley.

Notes

  • For extra richness, add layers of caramelized onions or cooked bacon.
  • These scalloped potatoes pair perfectly with roasted meats or can be enjoyed as a vegetarian main dish.
